We increasingly hear from parents that the move from primary school to a Neue Mittelschule or Gymnasium does not go as smoothly as you might expect. In English, at least, the gap between primary and secondary school can sometimes be very large. Although the new school generally starts again from the beginning, the curriculum is packed, so teachers have to maintain a certain pace.
Not all pupils cope well with this. How difficult it is to manage all the material depends on how consistently English was taught at primary school and whether they already have some grounding in the language. With many other subjects added to the mix, there is not always enough time for English. Private tuition is then often needed to avoid poor marks.
We offer two programmes that can be used from the 3rd year of primary school to give pupils the best possible preparation for changing schools.
- Individual one-to-one coaching – One option is a weekly personal session with a Native Coach. Native speakers from places such as England, America, New Zealand or Australia teach perfect, accent-free English. Through playful exercises based on everyday activities, your child becomes familiar with the language, learns to use it actively and develops a feel for it. Sessions can take place at your home, or include short outings together – always in line with the COVID regulations in force at the time.
- The specially tailored “PAUL WARD EXPLORES” course – As an addition or alternative, we are launching a HYBRID HELEN DORON English course in December specifically for children in the 3rd and 4th years of primary school. HELEN DORON has been developing English courses for different age groups since 1985. Course materials tried and tested worldwide, online support and a streaming APP for listening again help children learn. There is even a dedicated “cool” radio station for their free time – in English.
Eight original songs, stories and engaging activities help pupils strengthen their phonics and English reading and writing skills while enjoying learning 1800 English words.
This new course is designed both for beginners aged 8–14 and for more advanced learners working at the pre-A1 examination level of the Common European Framework of Reference.

Pupils learn to speak English naturally, as a native language, through stories, songs, interaction and games that strengthen their phonics and English reading and writing skills.
